The M.A. in English is a
36-hour (12-course)
program. Two courses
may be taken in a department other than English. Half of the coursework
submitted must be at the 6000-level. One course in the Emphasis must be
designated as a seminar (offered each semester).
Core Courses for the M.A. (21 hrs.):
- ENGL 6101 Intro to English Studies
- ENGL 6160 Intro to the English Language
- 2 courses in Literature
- 2 courses in Rhetoric
- 1 Elective
Language Track (15 hrs.):
Select 4 at least courses from these (or all
five):
- ENGL 5050 Topics in English (linguistics topics
course only)
- ENGL 5161 Modern English Grammar
- ENGL 5165 Language and Culture
- ENGL 5166 Comparative Language Studies for Teachers
- ENGL 5167 The Mind and Language
- ENGL 5260 History of the English Language
- ENGL 5263 Linguistics and Language Learning
- ENGL 6070 Topics in English (linguistics topics
course only)
- ENGL 6161 Introduction to Linguistics
- ENGL 6162 History of the English Language
- ENGL 6163 Language Acquisition
Optionally, select 1 course from these:
- ENGL 5254 Approaches to Teaching English
- ENGL 5264 Literacy in Community and Family
- ENGL 6195 Teaching College English
- ENGL 5400 Practicum in Teaching Composition
OR substitute a course from outside the
Department, as permitted by M.A.
guidelines, such as:
- TESL 5101 Second Language Diagnosis and Evaluation
- FORL 5200 Secondary Methods--Foreign Languages
- ANTH 5120 Intercultural Communications
- etc.
OR combine with Elective for Thesis,
assistantship, internship, etc.
